Heights of Grass
Formed in 1976 by guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Don Grubb, Heights of Grass made a name for themselves performing a classic yet forward-thinking take on the timeless bluegrass format. Each of the group’s handful of albums displays expert technique, thoughtful arranging and a healthy dose of thinking outside the box.
In their career together the band released four studio albums and one live album. This includes their sole full-length album recorded for CMH, Encore!. Produced by bluegrass legend Sonny Osborne, Encore! features Don Grubbs alongside Richard Ward, Sonny Mead, Joe Breeding, Vernon Hughes and Billy Lux. In his thoughtful liner notes for the album, Osborne writes that Heights of Grass “work very hard and they are doing a lot of things right.”
While their lineup shifted over the years and few of the members had prominent output outside of Heights of Grass, the band’s skill and chemistry together is undeniable. Fans of the timeless sound of the Osborne Brothers, Lester Flatt and Don Reno will find plenty to love here with fast picking, smooth singing and songs galore.
