Marty Stuart
A stalwart songwriter, singer, guitarist and mandolinist in the modern country and bluegrass scene, Marty Stuart is a natural fit for CMH.
Born in 1958 in Philadelphia, Mississippi, Marty Stuart began performing Guitar and Mandolin live by the age of 12. Having initially performed gospel with a local group called The Sullivans, it wasn’t long before Stuart was picked up by bluegrass legend Lester Flatt and his group The Nashville Grass. He remained with The Nashville Grass touring and recording regularly until Flatt’s retirement in 1978.
Many of Stuart’s contributions to CMH were made during his time with Flatt and in the iterations of The Nashville Grass that followed. Stuart appears on nine albums that The Nashville Grass put out with CMH as well as on recordings with Josh Graves and Jimmy Martin and his 1992 album as bandleader, Once Upon a Time.
Beyond this work, Stuart spent several years performing with Johnny Cash, working as a session player and touring musician, and his own illustrious and successful career as a solo artist and bandleader. Stuart has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1992 and in 2020 he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Over his career he has won four Grammy awards and has been nominated for one other.
Stuart is currently working to open his Congress of Country Music in his hometown of Philadelphia, Mississippi, which will include a major collection of country music artifacts and memorabilia alongside The Ellis Theater, a large venue that features American roots music.
